Speaking of shows -- we were quite pleased with our showing so far this year. Our kids had a great time showing at the Poweshiek County Fair 4-H/FFA show. We had all Purple and Blue Goats - the Champion and Reserve Champion Fullblood Does.
Next we attended the Southern Iowa Fair -- we placed respectably with 2 first place finishes, two third place finishes, one fourth place finish. Division Champion Percentage Doe and Divsion Champion Full Blood Doe.
Then we attended the shows at the Iowa State Fair -- we had two really busy days In 4-H, Steph and Carson had 4 purple ribbon wethers and 2 blue ribbon wethers. Carson ended up in the Top Five in Intermediate Showmanship. In FFA - Stephanie had 1 purple ribbon and 4 blue ribbons. In the Open Show we had 1 third place, 3 fourth place, 2 fifth place, 1 sixth place and 1 eighth place. We left exhausted but very proud of our family and our goats.

TRICKMAN NEWS!!!!!
Let's talk pigmentation we have a Powell Holman Lionheart daughter - kidded in March whom has the happiest little guy on her side with the best pigmentation under his tail ever seen at this young age. This little guy is out of Ben (BQB Legion) -- Ben has thrown some tremendous kids this year... the new goat in town name is TBG Front Runner. Pigmentation is a big deal in the show ring - any registereed boer goat has to have dark pigmenation under the tail (we have some does with all dark pigmentation) --- if all you see is pink when you look under the tail then you will most likely be either disqualified from the show or stand very low in your class. Trickman thought: The buck had a lot of pigmentation at birth --he should carry that genetics to his offspring.. if you want to purchase a buck with a great pedigree and super genetics -- you had better jump on Trickman Boer Goats Front Runner before your competition buys him!
It's almost Show Time! Jez it is hard to believe in a short 6 to 7 weeks we will be showing. The kick off is our County Fair - Poweshiek County, next we might attend the open show at the Southern Iowa Fair, Oskaloosa, then the Iowa State Fair, followed by the IMGA and Tall Corn shows... we might even head to Missouri to a show in September. Hope to see you at the shows-- please make sure you introduce yourselves to us and let's talk GOATS!

Trickman Boer Goat Farm is a family farm located in Central Iowa. Our family consists of Rick and Cathy Van Wyhe, daughter Stephanie and son Carson. We live on a beautiful Central Iowa 80 acres farm and raise top quality Full Blood Registered and Percentage Boer goats, as well as superior Mini Rex Rabbits and Angus crossbred beef cattle. Our farm is very easy to find, as it is located close to I-80 and is approximately one hour east of Des Moines, Iowa and one hour west of Iowa City, Iowa. Trickman Boer Goats offers goats for sale in Iowa, all of which are either Fullblood Registered Boer goats or Percentage Boer goats.

The name "trickman" is due to one of Rick's other passions which is drag racing. Rick has been drag racing cars and motorcycles through out the Midwest for approximately 30 years. Over the years in the drag racing world Rick became known as "The Trickman". Trickman Rick has won national title races and was I.H.R.A. 2000 World Champion. In 2006 our Ford Thunderbird with a Chevrolet heart and soul won an Ironman Trophy at Martin, Michigan Northern Nationals. In April of 2007 the race car and trailer was sold as Trickman Rick decided it is more fun raising goats!
Trickman Boer Goats was established in 2006, which makes us fairly new to the goat world but rest assured we have worked very hard to locate and purchase excellent bloodline boer goats. Our goal is to offer the best boer goats for sale in Iowa as well as top market quality meat goats in Iowa. We are members of ABGA as well as IMGA. Our interests in meat goats came through 4-H when Carson, our son announced in 2005 he wanted to show meat goats at our local county fair in Grinnell, Iowa. At this time we started searching for meat goats, particularly show wethers to use as a 4-H project. This search became long and extensive. We attended a few workshops sponsored by the Iowa Meat Goat Association and learned as much as we could from the people giving the presentations. It was during this search we discovered South African Boer Goats and fell in love. Eventually we found a few percentage boer wethers to show and also purchased our first boer crossbred doelings. Our children both showed goats at the Poweshiek County fair, this was an excellent opportunity to get our feet wet in the goat show world. After our county fair we decided to attend the Iowa State Fair goat shows; FFA, 4-H and the open Boer Goat Show.

At the open goat show we hoped to obtain contacts to purchase quality goats from Iowa boer goat breeders. Our main search was to purchase a top quality buck to use as a herd sire and to locate bred boer does for sale in Iowa. We gathered business cards from the exhibitors and started looking at web sites as soon as we arrived home. Unfortunately, we could not find bred boer does for sale nor could we locate a full blood boer herd sire. This caused us to search the web through search engines to locate breeders in Eastern Iowa, Western Iowa, Southern Iowa, Northern Iowa or Central Iowa. We even looked for sites in Western IL, Central IL, Northern MO, Eastern NE, Southern WI and Southern MN. Finally we located Killian Boers known as "The Midwest's Premier Herd" of Boer Goats in Des Moines, Iowa. The owner Art Killian is a great person and had exactly the type of boer goat we were searching to purchase.
We purchased our herd buck, BDK TTR T2 , his nickname is "Jerry" as his facial profile resembles a close friend named Jerry. "Jerry" has an outstanding background as he has Downen Big 85, Eggsorcist, Pipeline and Starbuck in his pedigree. His sire is Killian's 562. In the past 6 months we have purchased does with Eggsfile, Mzuri, Bingo, Tabu, Yabu, Concho, Bingo's Classic Thriller, Oakridge Hudson, ORF Spanky, ORF Juice, Sumo, Tooter, Pistolero, Mojo and Eggschuck in their backgrounds. Many of our does are Powell/Holman bred, some of which are double Powell/Holman bred does. We should start kidding any day and will offer registered boer doelings and registered boer bucklings for sale in Iowa soon. Also we will offer top quality meat goats for sale in Central Iowa to consumers of chevon meat. Finally, we plan on investigating the "hot new" show wether market in Iowa and may enter in that market as well. Our main goal at the moment is concentrating on raising, producing and selling the best Registered Boer Goats in the state of Iowa. Look for Trickman Boer Goats at the 2008 Iowa State Fair as we plan on showing in the open class shows as well as both Stephanie and Carson plan on exhibiting boer goats in the 4-H and maybe the FFA shows.
In addition to our boer goat herd, we raise quality Mini Rex Rabbits. Our mini rex rabbits seed stock originated from a rabbitry in South Western Iowa known as Jamison Rabbitry and from Maple Kelly Rabbits in Eastern Iowa. We established our rabbitry in 2002. Our daughter, Stephanie, had a very successful year in 2006 with numerous wins at the local county fair. She had the top three Senior Mini Rex Bucks, one of which was named Best of Breed Mini Rex Rabbit as well as the top Senior Mini Rex Doe, who was Best Opposite Sex Mini Rex. Her Best of Breed Mini Rex Buck went on and was named Grand Champion Rabbit at the Poweshiek County Fair. We were quite proud of this success as Stephanie home raised these rabbits. At the present we have four full siblings to her Grand Champion born in the Fall of 2006 and plan on breeding for Summer babies using the same buck and doe. We will also breed for Spring or Summer babies using the B.O.S. doe and another buck purchased from Maple Kelly this past Summer. We will be offering some of these offspring for sale in the future. We found as with our goats, locating quality mini rex rabbits for sale in Iowa was a difficult task. Our daughter has a goal of selling show quality Mini Rex rabbits in Iowa as well as start attending shows through out the Midwest.
As with most farms, we are diversified, raising the goats and rabbits as well as have a small beef cattle herd which are crossbred cows (Simmental, Maine Anjou, Angus and Shorthorn) that are pasture exposed to an Angus bull. We also have a small flock of chickens and raise hay. We would love to have you contact us if you are interested in our goats or our rabbits. Visitors are also welcome to our farm.

A group of young does on our farm due to start kidding in April 2008
For kidding in late 2007 and early 2008 we decided to breed our females to kid in waves or groups. Our first group of does to kid was most of our low percentage does and a few registered full blood does.
In the first group there were 14 does who gave us 26 live kids (we had 4 kid deaths; 3 at birth and 1 within a day of birth so all total we had 30 kids). This set of does kidded between December 16th and December 30 2007.
Our next group of does start kidding in mid January followed by a group due in late February and ending with the young does who should start kidding in April.

This picture is some of the does in group #2 and group number#3 to kid due January -March 2008.
We are looking forward to chosing our show kids - selecting some herd replacements and selling some great kids from these does. So keep checking our sale page as we will be posting bucks, bucklings, wethers, does and doelings through 2008.
Thank you to our buyers in 2007 as we had a very successful first year in sales. We have kept in touch with our buyers throughout the year and feel very proud of the animals we sold to these buyers as everyone seems pleased.
